Newborn Bath Products: How to Choose Safely

Newborn Bath Products: How to Choose Safely

Newborn and infant skin is exceptionally thin, sensitive, and vulnerable to irritation. Gentle cleansing is at the heart of good baby skincare — removing dirt and bacteria without stripping the skin's natural lipid barrier, which protects against dryness, pathogens, and allergic reactions. Choosing the right bath product from day one matters more than many parents realise. So what should you actually look for?

When to Start Using Bath Products?

Newborns arrive covered in vernix caseosa — the waxy, white protective coating that shields the skin from bacteria during and immediately after birth. For this reason, the first bath is typically delayed by several hours, allowing the vernix to continue doing its job. When bathing does begin, a bath wash is the safest choice: added to warm water in the tub, it dilutes significantly before touching the skin, making it far gentler than applying any product directly.

It's also worth resisting the urge to bathe your newborn every day. Bathing every 2–3 days is entirely sufficient for hygiene and avoids the cumulative drying effect that daily washing can have on very young skin. Between baths, gentle wiping of the face, neck folds, and nappy area is all that's needed.

What to Look for in a Baby Bath Product

The first rule is simplicity. The shorter and more natural the ingredient list, the better — especially in the early weeks. Standard adult soap or shower gel is off the table: these products are formulated to cut through sebum and fight dandruff or odour in ways that would badly disrupt a baby's delicate lipid mantle.

A good newborn bath wash should contain mild surfactants only — never SLS or SLES, which are too aggressive for infant skin. Beneficial additions include plant oils (linseed, olive, or jojoba), rice proteins, and botanical extracts such as oat, chamomile, hibiscus, or lavender. These ingredients don't just clean — they nourish, regenerate, and help maintain the moisture balance of the skin. Lavender in particular is a gentle ally at bathtime: its calming properties can help settle a baby struggling with colic or teething discomfort. What you want to avoid entirely: parabens, artificial dyes, alcohol, fragrance, and any ingredient you can't pronounce.

The best baby bath products belong to the emollient category — formulas specifically designed to strengthen the skin barrier and provide gentle care even for atopic, very dry, or allergy-prone skin. Explore our range in children's hygiene for certified-safe options.

Linseed Oil and Olive Oil: Two Trusted Ingredients

Among the most recommended botanical ingredients in baby skincare are linseed (flaxseed) oil and olive oil. Linseed oil is particularly valued for its high content of essential unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E — it fills in gaps in the skin's natural lipid film, sealing in moisture and keeping pathogens out, while leaving skin feeling noticeably soft. Olive oil-based products, suitable from around the first month, gently cleanse and moisturise without causing irritation. Both are well tolerated by sensitive and reactive infant skin.

Washing a Baby's Hair

A newborn's scalp doesn't produce sebum at anything like the rate an adult's does, so hair washing only needs to happen once or twice a week. Never use adult shampoo — the formulas designed to combat dandruff or oiliness are far too strong for infant scalp skin. Look for products specifically labelled for babies and young children, ideally 2-in-1 formats that combine shampoo and bath wash for convenience. The essential requirement is a "no tears" formula — if it stings sensitive adult eyes, it has no place near a baby's face.

Calendula extract is one of the most well-regarded ingredients in gentle baby shampoos: it's soothing, mildly anti-inflammatory, and well established in natural baby care. You'll find it in several of the certified products in our children's hygiene collection.
